7.16-TIPS-AND-TRICKS-BANNER-IMAGEWhen I make jewelry I prefer to use sterling silver wire or findings. Though base metal is a great money saver, there is just something so appealing and special about sterling silver that captivates me, so it is my go-to metal every time. It is traditional, it has intrinsic value and it makes me feel like I am part of a great jewelry tradition that has been passed down for centuries. The only drawback to sterling silver is its susceptibility to tarnish. I know a lot of customers are concerned about this. They worry that if they give a piece of sterling silver jewelry that the recipient may be disappointed when the piece eventually tarnishes. To those people, I say fear not! With a little care, the specter of tarnish can be easily vanquished with just a few precautionary steps.

Tarnish is the result of a chemical reaction with sulfur-containing substances in the air. Though tarnish is annoying it need not spoil your enthusiasm for silver. With just a few steps you can slow the process down dramatically. Storing sterling silver in a Ziploc bag or dry airtight container like Tupperware can help prevent the onset of tarnish. Including Anti-Tarnish Tabs in with your jewelry during storage can further protect against tarnish for up to 6 months.tl2851When you do need to clean your sterling silver it’s easy to remove the tarnish by buffing it clean with a Brilliant Polishing Cloth or a Pro Polish Pad. These products include a chemical agent that helps remove the tarnish with ease.tl0605tl0617When I give a piece of jewelry I like to include a personalized note along with a little instruction card listing these tarnish prevention tips. To sweeten the deal I often include either an Anti-Tarnish Tab or Pro Polish Pad in the gift box as well so the recipient is already prepared to keep their new jewelry pristine and gleaming.img_6307I find this little extra attention and forethought really adds value to the gift, and it is always greatly appreciated!
